    At first I laughed, but then I thought, ‘Wait a second…am I a hipster?’

    • March 25, 2011 12:19 am

Those glasses … I don’t know. Do you ride a fixie?

      • March 25, 2011 11:05 am

I don’t really require these glasses. I just drew these onto the picture…although I did color them with Been Done Black.

      • March 26, 2011 6:34 pm

        BAhahahAHAHahhAHA

    • March 25, 2011 12:21 am

      Also: Two new bonus colors

    • March 25, 2011 12:57 pm

      Hey,
I actually looked up Jape and Scamp a few years ago and love both words. Noticed the Pabst and Crayolas–sounds like a pleasant way to spend a rainy afternoon. Lot of discussion about whether Pabst has become the beer of choice for hipsters. Anecdotal evidence from New Orleans is that the answer is Yes. Popular beer in Flanagan’s Irish Pub, and was my beer of choice while standing outside Rouse’s supermarket on Royal Street listening to the street musicians. Loved the pix today. Cheers, Ceejay

If you have to have an existential crisis along the lines of asking yourself whether you are a hipster, you probably are. But don’t worry, there are cures. Up here in Canada, the cold usually weeds out those tight jeans with no room for long johns and canvas shoes pretty quickly. Some of the bearded and plaid ones survive, though.

      • March 26, 2011 3:53 pm

Clearly you haven’t been to the Mile End in Montreal lately.

      • March 27, 2011 10:19 pm

Haha, I believe the great hipster debate there is “Cafe Social or Cafe Olympico”. No, you’re right, I haven’t been there in a while, at least not since The Arcade Fire got huge. So how about that colour? Arcade Fire Red.

    • April 3, 2011 10:29 am

This is a love in my book.

  2. March 25, 2011 7:45 am

Aren’t colored pencils hipper than crayons anyway?

And why no silver o r gold or glittery colors? Those are totally hip, right?

Hip and Hipster are different. Crayons have an ironic “I don’t give a crap and I want to make sure everyone notices” quality to them. 🙂

    • March 25, 2011 10:30 am

My son (who’s 9, mind you) informed me that people who say “hip” are old…. :/ D’oh.

      • March 25, 2011 12:03 pm

Tell him you’re demoting him to the basic “8” box.

    • March 26, 2011 8:21 am

  4. March 25, 2011 8:26 am

    Pabst Ribbon Blue?! Oh, nooo….!

  5. March 25, 2011 8:26 am

Pabst Ribbon Blue? Blue Moon Blue for me…does that make me less hip?

I feel like, at least here in brooklyn, PBR as the official hipster beer is so 2000. But wait, maybe that makes it “retro” and somehow hip again…

Either way, great post. I would add a drab gray and call it, “Meh.”

  6. March 25, 2011 8:27 am

Do you get bonus points if you’re wearing an NBA-throwback jersey over your oxford while drawing with these?

  7. March 25, 2011 8:28 am

    These are awesome. Simply awesome.

As someone who writes about my crazy, post-betrayal, post-divorce life, I think “Jaded green” may just be my color. Though I think I’d need something like “bitter lemon” to balance it out!

Of course, since my ex is suing me to stop my blog (apparently not comfortable with my words, no matter the hue), I think “whatever red” may be more appropriate! The case is in a few weeks; I’ll have to see what happens then decide from there. 😉

GREAT list. Thank you for sharing.

I think decaying rocks and edible coloring tools (yeah) are more hipster than traditional crayons.. I’ve been known to color my journal with chocolate brown, blood red (a skateboarding accident), and any other food (or–not food) item that would spill or squeeze something “pretty.”

I bought my some some new crayolas the other day, they are spirals. Seen them? They are cool. But man, nothing is better then just a basic box of crayons..the smell, the colors…perfection. … The only reason they put white in the box is because there would be a social uproar i they didn’t. Maybe they should have named it Shaun Cassidy white or something to give it an edge… okay, I know its a stretch.

    • March 25, 2011 5:42 pm

It is a totally unmistakable, memory-evoking smell, isn’t it? Nothing quite like a new box of Crayolas…or the crayon sharperner in the back! 😉

      • March 25, 2011 6:07 pm

I agree. I remember my first Box.
        I loved my sharpener too.

I like your post… I dont think i’ll ever forget “Jaded Green”….it’s like it on repea in my head ever since I read it.

My hipster youngest son is continuing the hipster education of their one year old daughter Evy one day at a time. As soon as I forward this link, he and daughterinlaw will be replacing the color names on their box of 255 with up to date discriptors such as Your Not The Boss of ME Mauve. Great post. Excellent blog, and at the risk of being social media trite . . . . congrats on FP! Oh, BTW . . . how about Word Press Teal? (lookin’ at their “W” logo). Obama Bronze? Just thinking outloud here. Not even a nod to Burnt Umber?

  112. March 27, 2011 1:45 pm

    What a maroon!

  113. March 27, 2011 1:47 pm

I laughed because I’m surrounded by hipsters. And then I realized how much those crayons WERE cool before you blogged about them. Now EVERYONE uses them.

  114. March 27, 2011 3:33 pm

Awesome.. liked the obscure gold one (by popular demand??)

I’m definitely a bit like that – always liking to be the first to know about something, then thinking back on the day when it wasn’t popular. I don’t want to label myself a hipster, because I was like that way before I ever heard of the word “hipster.”

    SOOO FUNNY AND CLEVER.

y does everybody give a crap about crayons? i mean isn’t that what we are talking about?

    • March 27, 2011 6:06 pm

I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately, the American wax lobby is unbelievably powerful.

  119. March 27, 2011 6:03 pm

    I liked that

  120. March 27, 2011 6:31 pm

I had no idea that PBR is the beer of choice for hipsters. I find that so strange. Out where I’m from it’s the beer of choice for rednecks. Well, when you can’t get Shiner Bock. 😉

  121. March 27, 2011 6:32 pm

I swear it sounds like some of the makeup colors at our counter. Sometimes I’m too embarrassed to say them. Like “soft and slow”. How can I say that to an old lady?
I love “burnt pfft”. It sounds dark burnt orange.
    Love your post!!

  122. March 27, 2011 6:37 pm

love the hipster crayola post, and laughed my head off..
but now that I have used up all my Been Done Black, I am forced to use my
Get The Lead Out #2 pencil, with my pink Rubber Meets the Road eraser…
    (memory problems)

    I am glad that the Pabst Blue Ribbon blue was a accepted since the think that they are for children. Here’s an idea Let’s have over 21 crayons . We could have Blue Moon Blue , Mary Jane Green, special Brownie brown, tarry stool black, you get it ; }

  125. March 27, 2011 7:47 pm

I’m waiting for the day hipsters will start wear crayons as an accessory

  126. March 27, 2011 9:16 pm

This is so great! I love the names! haha

  127. March 27, 2011 10:50 pm

I’ve always wondered who they pay to think up the crayon colors.

You’re required to take a rigorous staying-inside-the-lines test.

Hip and Hipster are different. Crayons have an ironic “I don’t give a crap and I want to make sure everyone notices” quality to them.

  147. April 10, 2011 11:12 pm

That awkward moment when you look at the brown chair next to you and wonder: “Is THAT Organic Fair Trade Brown….?”

    • April 10, 2011 11:26 pm

Constant furniture anxiety is just the price of being a hipster.
